UAE Dependent Visa Guide 2026: Process & Requirements
March 19, 2026

Introduction

The UAE dependent visa (also known as a family residence visa) allows UAE residents to sponsor their immediate family members—such as spouses and children—to live with them legally in the country. While the process is straightforward when all requirements are met, it can become complex if key documents (such as attested certificates) are missing or timelines are tight.

This guide explains the entire process in a clear, practical way, including requirements, costs, timelines, and important considerations—especially for applicants inside the UAE.

What is a UAE Dependent Visa?

A UAE dependent visa is a residence visa issued to family members of a UAE resident sponsor. Once approved, the dependent receives legal residency rights in the UAE and can access services such as healthcare, banking, and housing.

The visa is typically valid for 1 to 3 years, depending on the sponsor’s visa.

Who Can Be Sponsored?

A UAE resident can sponsor:

  • A spouse (wife or husband, subject to conditions)

  • Children (sons and unmarried daughters within eligibility limits)

  • Parents (with additional requirements)

For this article, we focus on spouse sponsorship, which is the most common scenario.

Key Requirements for Sponsoring a Spouse

To sponsor a wife in Dubai, the sponsor must meet the following conditions:

1. Valid Residency Status

The sponsor must:

  • Hold a valid UAE residence visa

  • Have a valid Emirates ID

2. Minimum Salary Requirement

Generally:

  • AED 4,000 monthly salary, OR

  • AED 3,000 with accommodation provided

3. Proof of Accommodation

A valid tenancy contract (Ejari) is required to demonstrate suitable housing.

4. Attested Marriage Certificate

This is one of the most critical requirements.

For certificates issued outside the UAE (e.g., UK), the document must be:

  • Legally attested in the country of issuance

  • Attested by the UAE Embassy in that country

  • Attested by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA)

  • Translated into Arabic by a certified translator (if not already in Arabic)

Without proper attestation, the application will not be approved.

5. Health Insurance (Dubai Requirement)

In Dubai, valid health insurance is mandatory before final residence visa issuance. The policy can be obtained even if the dependent is not yet a resident.

Step-by-Step UAE Dependent Visa Process

Step 1: Prepare Documents

The first step is gathering all required documents. These include:

  • Sponsor passport, visa, and Emirates ID

  • Dependent passport copy and photographs

  • Attested marriage certificate

  • Salary certificate or labour contract

  • Tenancy contract (Ejari)

  • Health insurance (for final stage)

Ensuring documents are complete at this stage prevents delays later.

Step 2: Apply for Entry Permit

The entry permit is the first official approval issued by immigration.

In Dubai, this is processed through:

  • GDRFA (online portal) or

  • AMER centres

If the spouse is already inside the UAE, you must select:

“Inside UAE Entry Permit”

This allows the process to continue without the dependent leaving the country.

Step 3: Status Change (Inside UAE Applicants)

If the dependent is on a tourist or visit visa, a status adjustment is required.

This converts the visa from:

Visit Visa → Residence Visa Process

This step avoids the need to exit and re-enter the UAE.

Step 4: Medical Fitness Test

All dependents aged 18 and above must undergo a medical fitness test.

This includes:

  • Blood test

  • Chest X-ray

Applicants must be medically cleared before proceeding.

Express (VIP) services are available to speed up this step.

Step 5: Emirates ID Application

After medical clearance, the Emirates ID application is submitted.

This involves:

  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo)

  • Linking the ID to the residence visa

Step 6: Residence Visa Issuance

Once all steps are completed, the residence visa is issued digitally.

The dependent is now legally resident in the UAE.

Processing Time

If documents are complete, the process typically takes:

  • Entry permit: 1–3 working days

  • Status change: 1–3 working days

  • Medical + Emirates ID: 2–5 days

  • Final visa issuance: 1–2 days

Total: Approximately 5–10 working days

However, delays can occur if required documents (such as attested certificates) are not ready.

Applying While Inside the UAE

It is possible to apply for a dependent visa while the spouse is already inside the UAE on a tourist visa.

However, it is critical to:

  • Submit the application before the tourist visa expires

  • Or extend the tourist visa if documents are not ready

Failure to do so may result in overstay fines.

Common Challenges and Delays

1. Unattested Marriage Certificate

This is the most common reason for delays or rejection.

2. Missing Insurance

In Dubai, residence visas cannot be finalized without health insurance.

3. Incomplete Documentation

Errors in application or missing documents can delay processing.

Practical Advice for Applicants

  • Start document attestation early, especially for foreign certificates

  • Use AMER centres for faster and more reliable processing

  • Consider extending the tourist visa if timelines are tight

  • Opt for express medical services to save time

Conclusion

The UAE dependent visa process is efficient when all requirements are met, but it requires careful planning—especially when dealing with document attestation and visa expiry timelines.

For applicants already inside the UAE, timing is critical. Submitting applications early or extending the tourist visa can prevent unnecessary stress and legal complications.

By preparing documents in advance and following the correct sequence, the process can be completed smoothly within a short period.
