What Is a UID Number in the UAE — and Why It Matters
October 27, 2025

If you’re living, working, or setting up a business in the UAE, you’ve likely come across the term “UID number” more than once. But what exactly is it—and why is it so important?

At Theta7, we assist clients daily with immigration, company setup, compliance, and taxation matters. In this guide, we’ll break down everything you need to know about the UAE’s Unified Identification Number (UID).

What Is a UID Number?

The UID—or “Unified Identification Number” (sometimes referred to by immigration authorities in the UAE)—is a permanently assigned identifier to an individual who holds a UAE residence visa. Unlike your visa number or your Emirates ID number, this UID remains constant even if you renew your visa, change employers, or switch visa types.

It functions behind the scenes to link your immigration records, residence permit, entries and exits, and other status indicators.

How is the UID issued and where can you find it?s

When you obtain or renew a residence visa in the UAE, the immigration/visa paperwork will include the UID. Typically you’ll see it in your passport visa stamp (or entry-permit sheet) rather than on your Emirates ID alone.

👉 Tip: Always make a note of your UID and keep it with your visa and residence documents—it becomes part of your permanent immigration record.

Why the UID number matters

Your UID may seem like a small detail, but it plays a big role in how the UAE government and businesses track, verify, and manage identity and compliance.

Here are the key reasons it matters (especially from a business / compliance standpoint):

1. It’s permanent

Your UID remains constant even when your visa or employer changes. Because your visa number may change over time, having the UID allows authorities and service providers to track you consistently.

2. It links government records

Many government systems (immigration, labour, health, free-zone authorities) rely on the UID to tie together multiple layers of compliance and status.

3. It’s Required for Company-setup & visa services

When you set up a company, sponsor visas, apply for licences or engage with free-zone authorities, the UID is often required. Not having it or having an incorrect UID can delay processes.

4. It’s Crucial for Compliance and Due Diligence

For anti-money-laundering (AML), beneficial-ownership, visa-sponsorship and KYC checks, accurate personal identifiers such as the UID matter — they help trace and verify identity over time.

5. It’s Relevant for Free Zone and Trade Licence Applications

If you operate in a free zone, you’ll likely need to provide UID numbers for shareholders, managers, or employees. Missing or inconsistent UIDs can trigger compliance issues or documentation flags.

Why this is particularly relevant for company-owners and service‐providers
At Theta7 we regularly support clients with: company formation (mainland and free zones), visa sponsorship, accounting & tax services, and compliance frameworks. In those contexts:
  • When appointing a shareholder or manager who holds a UAE residence visa, you should capture their UID (alongside passport, Emirates ID, visa number).
  • When registering or renewing a licence in a free zone, authorities may ask for the UID of the visa-holder.
  • For bookkeeping / accounting systems, especially when integrating immigration status of owners or directors, having a persistent identifier like the UID is helpful.
  • From an AML / KYC perspective (which you’re very much aware of, given your compliance role), adding the UID into your data-capture template for clients, beneficiaries or related parties improves traceability.

Practical Steps: Your UID Compliance Checklist

Here’s how to make sure your UID data is always accurate and accessible:

  1. Once a visa is issued/renewed: note down the UID in your master file (client record, director file, etc.).
  2. When onboarding a new shareholder, director or employee: ask for their UID (in addition to passport/visa).
  3. If you can’t locate someone’s UID (older visas, multiple visas) — check their visa stamp in their passport, ask the immigration authority or the free zone authority.
  4. If someone appears to have more than one UID (rare, but possible due to legacy records) — escalate as this can cause compliance or licence issues.
  5. In your service contracts (company-setup, visa sponsorship, accounting) consider making the provision of correct UID one of the client’s obligations.
  6. For your internal systems (e.g., your AI accounting/AML workflows) you may include a field for UID in the “client metadata” so that you always have it as part of your onboarding dataset.
